Premiere of “Wars Welcomes You” — Hits of Wały Jagiellońskie on the Stage

On 20 September 2024, the Main Stage of the Municipal Theatre in Gliwice hosted the premiere of „Wars wita Was”(“Wars Welcomes You”) — a grotesque-satirical musical journey through the greatest hits of the legendary Polish band Wały Jagiellońskie.

The script was written by Michał Chludziński and directed by Jerzy Jan Połoński, with co-direction by Grzegorz Krawczyk. Musical arrangements were prepared by Marcin Partyka, with choreography by Jarosław Staniek.

The audience is transported to the Wały Jagiellońskie station — where, as the show’s introduction puts it, you can theoretically travel anywhere, but somehow always end up coming back. On the platform, a lifeguard’s girlfriend, a fisherman’s daughter, a football fan with a scarf and a passenger with a suitcase all meet — and sing together. The songs of Wały Jagiellońskie are not just pop hits that entertained Poles from Hel to Zakopane; they are sharp, funny and sometimes bitter commentaries on Polish reality — our dreams, desires and longings. The show features all the classics: “Córka rybaka” (“The Fisherman’s Daughter”), “Tylko mi ciebie brak” (“I Only Miss You”), “Monika córka ratownika” (“Monika, the Lifeguard’s Daughter”), “Grusza a sprawa polska” (“The Pear Tree and the Polish Question”) and, of course, the title track “Wars wita Was” (“Wars Welcomes You”).

The performance runs 95 minutes without an interval and is recommended for audiences aged 16 and above.
